The Orange Rhino's "Yell Less, Love More" Book Review and Giveaway

Hi! It's Jilly...and I'm a yeller. *Gulp* I hate to even say that, but it's true. I come from a long line of yellers. My parents were yellers (Sorry, Mom). Their parents were yellers. I don't know about their parents, but I have a good guess.

When I was younger I swore I would never yell at my kids. I hated it and didn't want that for my kids. Yet, here I am...nine years into the parenting gig and what do I do? Yell.
Review of the new book "Yell Less, Love More" by Sheila McCraith #parenting #book #OrangeRhino

And, just like their mother before them, my kids hate it. They say I'm mean. They ask me why I am yelling at them. They yell back. That is NOT the spirit I want in my home. I want our home to be a place filled with peace, love, and joy. A refuge from the storms of life, not a stormy, non-peaceful place itself.

I knew that something needed to change. Yes, parenting triplets is hard, but that doesn't mean I need to yell all the time. I'd heard about this "Orange Rhino Challenge" thing. A good friend of mine did it and she said the change in her home was miraculous. Well, I needed a miracle. When I saw on Facebook that the "Orange Rhino lady" had written a book and was looking for a few people to review it, I thought to myself, "That could be good. That could be the very thing I need. I'll toss my name in the hat and see what happens".

"Yell Less, Love More: How the Orange Rhino Mom Stopped Yelling at Her Kids...and How You Can Too!!" By Sheila McCraith #parenting #book #orangerhino

When I found out my number had been chosen I was thrilled! The timing couldn't have been more perfect. The morning I received the PDF of the book in my email was our first 'official' day of homeschool! I sat on the couch and ripped through the first 20 pages of the book, bawling my eyes out. It was like she was speaking to me! As I've read more and more of the book I am just so amazed. It's like Sheila and I are twins or something!

The book is a perfect blend of honesty, humor, and encouragement. I love how it is broken down into daily challenges, with lots of tips, fun visuals, and quotes along the way. The little boxes at the beginning and end of each chapter are so helpful when you're a busy mom and just have a second to glance at the book. She also includes in the back a section full of FAQs, Common Triggers and Solutions, and a few "Top Ten" lists.

I'm still on the journey. I haven't completely stopped yelling, but I know it's a process that takes a lot of hard work and I'm happy with the progress I've made so far. Every time I felt like I was "lame" or "sucking at this Orange Rhino thing", I would read the book and she would seriously say "You're not lame" or "You don't suck...this is hard!" Ta daaaaaa! I can DO this!

Great post! I am hoping to get my hands on this book soon. I'm a mom of 3 (soon to be 4) and there are days where I feel like all I do is yell at my kids.

Love this - I've been starting and stopping the orange rhino journey and had a great moment on Monday with my kids when I actually DID it... I didn't yell when I normally would and was so proud of myself!! :) Thanks Sheila... thanks Jilly!

My husband and I committed to the Orange Rhino Challenge 10 days ago because we were just really sad about the state of our household. Too much yelling and crying and general yukky-ness. We are expecting our 4th in January and we knew we needed a change before a new stress entered our lives. So far it's been challenging but great. We already see results...specifically, our 4 year old yells a lot less too. So great. I cannot wait to get my hands on this book, and I'm psyched it's getting so much press and blog attention. Parenting is hard...we all need help sometimes!

I have not heard of this but something I definitely need to read by the sounds of it. I hope to win but even if I don't I'll probably run out and buy it too!

I have a home daycare. Ive got all the patience in the world for the beautiful babies (my 19 month old included), but the minute my four year old stops listening, I lose it on her. Makes me numb. Cant stand the feeling! Its a dailybstruggle but others around me think its normal. I dont want it to be MY normal.

I've been an Orange Rhino follower for about 17 months and completely yell free for 10 straight months. It took some time, but I think I've finally broken the cycle.

Looks like a great book! I've heard of it, but never actually from someone who's read the book. Isn't it funny how we turn into our parents, no matter how much we swore we wouldn't? Glad there are ways to break that cycle though!
I love the orange rhino! I struggle with yelling, so I would love to win the book!
I have heard of this and keep meaning to check it out and I haven't yet! I'm more of a yeller than I would like and seriously want to read this and bring some peace back to our house!

This looks like a great book! I have never heard of it but I am definitely moving it to the top of my list!
Looks like an awesome book ~ cant wait to read it.
Great Post, looking forward to reading this book and really learning how to control my yell.
I tried the Orange Rhino challenge before and it totally helped me be more mindful of my triggers to yell. I still yell sometimes, but it is less than before. I'd love to read her book!

I need this book so I can figure out how to talk to my kids and not just yell at them!!

I have heard about the OR Challenge on Twitter, and it's interesting, but I need to learn more. The book would be great!

I am also a yeller. I've gone long periods without it (and yes, I've read much of Orange Rhino's stuff), but stress creeps in, and I lose it!

I haven't heard of it before.. but I need it! :)
I haven't heard of the challenge before but figure anything that involves less yelling and potentially more sanity sounds good to me!
great post. I would love to check out that book! I am a recovering yeller. LOL. As In I did, but I haven't for years. In my house, the repercussions of me loosing my temper were just too costly so I stopped yelling when I was angry. Now I only yell when I am being obnoxious or happy. I'm not an angry yeller, but we are still a LOUD family.
I heard of orange rhino a year or so ago. I was determined to try, but it fell by the wayside :( She used to have orange rhino bracelets you could get for everyone to remind the family not to yell... I wonder if she still has those?? Anyway, I'd LOVE the book!
